Editing

Today we started to edit and completed 40 seconds of the video. The first 40 seconds of the video below is is the completed start of the video however the rest is still in progress which is why the lip sinking is out to the music.

Once we started to edit one of the shots shows a coat hanger to the left of him and a picture frame above him. So that this would not come out in the final footage we had to crop the video. As you can see in the picture above there is a black border around the footage. Once this had done i left the editing and the others in my group managed to change this.

Filming

Today we started to film our music video to The Colours song "Tonight I Let You Go". Here are several photos we took while we were filming.

Tuesday, 11 December 2012

Resources

To do our music video there is a list of props, equipment, cast and crew that we need.
As this is just a small production there are a lot of the cast and crew that will have many different roles.
We will need:
Actors
Camera operator
Editor
Director
all of these may have different people doing them at different times maybe due to, unforeseen circumstances, people having other tasks to do at that time, for example if some one is ill or if someone is doing the acting someone else will have to take their role for this time.

The equipment we will need is:
Camera
Tripod- to do static shots
Monopod- to give the handheld effect- so we can film tracking shots.

We are yet to decide what exact props we will need for our final music video however a list of our props for the draft was:
A Didi Car
A wind up toy
These were the only placed props we used in our draft.

100 greatest music videos No. 1

Number 1 on the greatest music videos is Thriller by Michael Jackson released in 1983 is the greatest music video due to many factors. At this time Jackson was one of the best singers and dancers in the music industry. The budget for this music video was $500,000 and lasted 13 minutes 43 seconds. The synchronistic of all the dancing helps this video to be the best. When this video was released, people had to wait for the video to be aired on television making this an event.

100 greatest music videos No.2

Number 2 on the 100 greatest music videos is Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel made in 1986.  This music video like A'ha Take me on, is iconic because of the well used technology. In Sledgehammer stop motion is used all the way through the video. This is a pretty basic method of animation however it is very hard to get it to a standard as good as this one as the main issues with this animation is continuity. If there is a problem with continuity the whole of the video may be ruined.

100 greatest music videos

3rd in the 100 greatest music videos is Take on me by A'ha made in 1985. This is a iconic video as it uses relatively new technology when this video was created. Rotoscoping is a large part of this film and is where a film is overlapped with drawings.

Animatic

After a change of thought in what we are doing we have changed the animatic. This is the new one.

Test music video

We help us come up with ideas for our music video we filmed this test to see what was and wasn't possible. Originally I would say that this was not a ideal way of filming as it is very unstable however after we filmed we was told about the monopod which could help us stabilise the camera when filming.  If we was to do something like this again then we would have to use a monopod.

100 greatest music videos

In at number 6 on the 100 greatest music videos is Robbie Williams with the song Rock DJ. In this video Robbie shows his arrogance at the height of his solo career with his dance and all the extras being women. In the video it shows women skating around him while he tares off his skin and and body parts  and throws them at the women until he is a skeleton. This video is disturbing in parts and in some ways quite random.

In at 4th in the 100 greatest videos is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen in 1975. This is an iconic video as it was the first modern music video to be made so that the band could appear on Top of the Pops without having to interrupt their tour. The video shows all four band members as if i was filmed through a prism.

100 greatest music videos

Christina Aguilera's Dirrty in 14th in the 100 greatest music videos. This video is to help change Christina Aguilera's image form a young girl in the Mickey Mouse club to a sexy women.

11th in the top 100 is The Scientist by Coldplay. This is one of the 100 greatest videos due to the skill and technology needed when filming and lip sinking. While filming the directors realised that if the person lipsinking simply lip sinked backwards then this will not work. To make it look ike he was lipsinking when the film was played bacwards the singer would have to learn a special way of doing this. The way how the whole footage and the lip sinking is executed makes this video deserving of being in the top 100 music videos.

After a couple of days people start to notice him and he gets offered into a band. The band become very successful and after a while his love decides that she would be better of with a rich boyfriend and dumps her other one and tries to get back with the protagonist. However he sees right through this and decides to right a song called Tonight I Let You Go about him getting over a love that threw him away. The Band then show their name which is obviously The Colours.

100 greatest music videos

31st on the 100 greatest videos is Stan by Eminem featuring Dido. The video shows  the story of an obsessed Eminem fan who kills himself and his pregnant wife after Eminem failed to sign an autograph for him. This is one of the greatest 100 music videos as it paints the picture of a hard hitting music video. The video shows the emotions of the music.

In at 16th on the 100 greatest music videos is Outkast with thier song Hey Ya made in 2003. The video shows 1 member of the band playing all 8 members in a band setting where all 8 are visible at the same time. Preliminary task review

For the preliminary task we had to make a music video of a verse and chorus of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". By doing the preliminary task I learned how to record lips sinking from different angles and at what distances lip sinking can and cant be seen at. I also learned how to edit the music video. Even though I have done editing before, this is different as you have to line the music up exactly to the lip sinking whereas before when I have edited this did not have to be done.

The Colours

The Colours are a relatively new band who have recently been focusing their efforts on their debut single   'Tonight I Let you Go' which was released in April 2012. The band is made up of three men from Reading including:

The bands target audience is a young indie/techno base and also those that look for meaning into the music and videos that they listen to and watch.
Other songs released by The Colours are:

Animatic for our music video

100 Greatest music videos

55 on the top 100 is Fat Boy Slim's Praise You, made in 1999 is an iconic music video as it shows a dance group dancing outside a cinema. The video also shows the responses of onlookers as this was a set up and none of the audience knew what this was for.  The video was shot in one take and was taken on 5 handheld video cameras.

35th in the 100 greatest videos is Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor made in 1990. The song is a cover of U2's which was not a big hit for them. The video adds value to the song due to the pure emotions that are shown in the video. During the video Sinead cries over the death of her own mother. This adds real emotion to the video which will not come across unless it is in the video.

100 Greatest music videos

65th in the Greatest music videos was George Michael with Outside released in 1998. The video is about public sex and shows many scenes of this.  Shots are taken from a helicopter and what looks like CCTV cameras.  This is meant to show the views of the police.  This video was made after George Michael was arrested for having sex in a public toilet.

The Prodigy's Smack my Bitch up in 1997 was a music video that caused an outrage due to the questionable behaviour. The whole video is filmed in a point of view shot and was shot in one night.

Digipak

A Digipak is traditional a card outing with a plastic tray to hold the CD in place.
The things that will normally be seen on a digipak are:

The name of the artist and the name of the album.
The list of tracks on the CD.
The barcode on the back of the Digipak.
The record company logo and any additional information about them.
Disk impression and separate disk design.
6 Panels.
A spine with the name of the artist and/or album.
And an image of the artist on the inside.

The name of artist is in large white writing at the top of the cover to make it stand out and so it would be automatically recognised.
The picture shows Lana Del Rey the artist of the album.
Album title at the bottom of the page is a different colour to all other colours in the picture. This makes the title stand out and allowing anyone viewing it to remember the title of the album.

Preliminary task editing

For our preliminary task we had to film and edit two people lip sinking to Don't Go Breaking my heart by Elton John and Kiki Dee. This is a screen grab from when we were editing the preliminary task.

100 greatest videos

Elton John's I want love released in 2001 was performed by Robert Downey Junior and was taken in one take. This song is different to a lot of songs in the 100 greatest videos as it is not performed by the actual artists and that it is only taken in one shot.

My way by Sid Vicious released in 1979 is an icon music video. The video was filmed in 1 hour. The music video is controversial as it show Sid Vicious pulling out a pistol and shooting the audience before turning round walking up the stairs swearing at them. Along with the video being controversial, the song was as well. This is because it uses many swear words and words that were not originally used by Frank Sinatra.

Preliminary task

For the preliminary task this year we have to film around a minute of "Don't Go Breaking Your Heart" by Elton John And Kiki Dee. We are to do this to help us understand how to lip sink and edit as well as we can. By doing this task we can also look at different ways we can shoot music videos and also how to edit and different ways to do this.

Emil Nava

Emil Nava started as a runner for film production companies. This is the most likely starting place for any prospective director. This job is almost always unpaid and does what ever is wanted by people. After working as a runner he graduated to Assistant Director where he would manage the video shoots, for example give directions to lighting and electrical departments.

Nava then became a director and signed for Academy Films who are one of the biggest music video poduction companies however since then he has worked for between the eyes and currently works for Pulse.

At his busiest Nava made 24 music videos in one year. When he began to shoot videos for independent labels the budgets were very small being £5,000- £10,000. His most expensive video to date was for Jessie J costing around £160,000.

Nava's first budget was for Kid Brittish with their track "Our House". The budget of this video was £20,000 and was set in manchester with local residents taking part in the film. The video took 1 day to shoot and 3 days to edit, with 10 day pre production time.

Nava has since filmed Paloma Faith's "30 minutes love affair', Ed Sheeran's "lego house" , Rita Ora "RIP", Jessie J's "Price tag" and Ed Sheeran's "You Need Me".

He has now started to make adverts which have a much higher budget and production values but do not give as much cretive freedom as music videos do. His first advert was for L'Oreale.

Emil Nava's top tips are to use extreme close ups on faces hen ever possible and not to shoot the whole video in middle or long shots.

How the process of a music video works

In the music industry A commissioner from a record label sends the track of which they want a music video for to 5-10 directors. Each director then has to submit a treatment to the record label. The director who the record company thinks has created the best treatment will be commissioned to make the video. Only at this point is the director paid. Only the successful director is paid, which makes it even more important for directors to come up with a good treatment.

Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves started off making short films at Hull university. He used his award winning short films "Scratch" and "The Take-Out" as a calling card to get a foot in the door with the video production company Factory Films. With Factory Films Thraves made three very low budget videos for a cost of around £5,000 each.

While with Factory Films Thraves made two well know videos for well known bands Radiohead and Coldplay. Radioheads "just" was made by Thraves on a budget of £100,000 and was shot in 3 days, whereas Coldplay's "Scientist" was Made by Thraves with a Budget of £200,000 in 3 days.

Jamie Thraves has also shot several feature films including "The Low down", "Treacle Jr" and "The cry of the owl".

Jamie Thraves top tips are to use the lyrics but not to be too literal with them and also to go with the emotion of the lyrics.

Advanced portfolio in Media

There are several purposes of a music video. These are to draw attention to the song, advertisement, to illustrate the song, appeal to visual audience, express an individuals emotions, to tell a story, market an image, promote the song, album or band, persuade audience to buy the song, raise audience awareness of a group and product placement. An example of a music video illustrating the song and telling a story is "Stan" by Eminem. "next girl" by The Black Keys in an example of a music video used for advertisement and promoting the bands new album. Sinead O'Connor's tears in her cover of U2's "nothing Compares to you" is an example of expressing individual emotions as a purpose of a music video.

There are many ways of measuring the success of a music video, some are new and have more relevance nowadays however some are older ways and are now less useful however they can still be used.
These are:
word of mouth
the number of hits on YouTube
The amount of media articles and reports
The amount of times the video is shown on television
The amount of publicity
CD sales
Music charts

In the 20th and first few years of the 21st century Music charts, CD sales and the amount of times a video was shown on television would have been the main way of measuring the success of a music video however these are now becoming old and unreliable ways due to the increasing use of the internet to download and stream music videos. More and more people are choosing to download and watch videos online and more and more music TV channels start to play less music videos and more music related reality shows or documentaries. The new main ways of measuring the success of a music video is the number of hits on you tube or the amount of downloads.

My Favourite music video

My favourite music video is "Tighten Up" by The Black Keys. I rarely watch music videos but while look at videos from a band I liked I came across this video. I like this video because it is original, light hearted and in places reasonably funny. I also like this video because of the way it is filmed, I think that it is quite clever in the way it is done. For example even though it is clear that the children in the video are not singing you are taken into the story by the acting and filming and believe that they are.

How artists use music video's as promotions

While most people may be oblivious to the idea that music videos are mainly used as promotional tools, a fact that most artists try not to make too obvious, some artists make it very clear that the music video is purely for promotion. An extreme example of this, and one which many people might think is inappropriate for a campaign aimed at young music buyers, is 'Next Girl' by The Black Keys.

Conventions

The conventions of a music video depend on the genre of music video. The main conventions that should be in all music videos are dancing, a storyline and lip sinking. All music videos should have lip sinking in it and a storyline. Most of the time there are dancing which also makes this a video convention.

100 greatest videos

Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy, released in 1984 came 98th in channel 4s 100 greatest videos. The video shows the isolation of gay men in reallity. This video is significant because it shows the band challanging the publics perception of gay men and shows no instuments or lipsinking.

At 96 in the Channel 4 100 greatest music videos was the So Solid Crew with 21 Seconds which was released in 2001. The song involves 10 of the So Solid Crew members singing just 21 seconds each. As the group were mostly black youth from inner London the image of the band was mostly negative and were thought to be an aggressive group.

The Colours, Tonight I Let You Go lyrics

For the music video me and my group decided to chose 'Tonight I Let You Go' by The Colours. Here are the lyrics for this song.

Your empty promises
Stop filling up my mind while my loves’ away
Temptation calls me
To this
And loveless fools believe
Their guilty hearts still bleed
But their cold lifeless heart beats wear them out

[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I know I’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

My insecurities
Playing on my mind, colours never change
You should come back, come back, come back(And look for more)
But love that runs too deep
Stolen moments we couldn’t keep
You should go before the night time lets you down

[Chorus] Cause you’re the heart break that I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake
That no-one could save me from
But I know I’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more
You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go
Heart break, heart break
Heart break (tonight I let you go)
Heart, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart heart break
Tonight, heart break
Heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break, heart break
I just keep on running
You’re the heart break
I couldn’t deal with
You were the mistake that no-one could save me from
But I know I’m better off leaving now
You are the only reason I want it more

You know I want to be on my own tonight
I just keep on running
You know I want to be on my own tonight
Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go

Tonight I let you go

Copyright

To protect a creators materials and ideas the Copyright, Designs and Patents act 1988 was introduced. This act gives the creator rights to control how their material is use. The rights of control allow a creator to decide whether their material can be adapted, publicly performed and who they allow the material to be used by. This act in the music industry covers song lyrics, recordings and score.

For my music video I cannot break this act and therefore have found a way to use someone else's music but will not break this act. To do this I e-mailed the owner of the rights to the song asking them if I could use it for my music Video. I was given permission and by doing this I am making sure that the Copyright act is not being broken.
